Bill Lane – A Passionate Pickleball Coach and Instructor

Bill Lane is a highly regarded pickleball coach and instructor, boasting numerous credentials that underline his commitment to the sport. He is an IPTPA Level 1 and Level 2 Certified Instructor, an NCCP Level 1 Instructor, and an accredited referee with Pickleball Alberta. As a member of both the Calgary Pickleball Club and Pickleball Alberta, Bill’s influence and expertise are felt throughout the community. His dedication was recognized when he was voted Coach of the Year in Alberta for 2024, and he proudly brought home Gold and Silver medals in 2023 and 2024.

Bill’s journey in pickleball began in 2018 when he received a paddle as a Christmas gift. Discovering his love for the game, he quickly joined the IPTPA coaching group and obtained his Level 1 certification. This path allowed him to collaborate with some of Calgary's senior coaches, honing his skills and deepening his understanding of the sport.

Over the years, Bill has led more than 75 Intro Clinics, where he introduces new players to pickleball through engaging 4-6 hour lessons. Following these introductory sessions, participants have the chance to play in beginner sessions, allowing them to practice what they’ve learned. As their skills develop, Bill offers Novice and Intermediate sessions that focus on drills designed to elevate their game.

One of the most rewarding aspects of coaching for Bill is witnessing his students advance to higher skill levels. His commitment to their growth has created a positive impact on the pickleball community. Last year, he successfully completed his IPTPA Level 2 certification, elevating him to one of the senior coaches in Calgary. He has since taught numerous group and private lessons at various locations, including Parkland Community, The Glencoe Club, Acadia Rec Centre, Woodcreek Community, Hawkwood Community, Seven Chiefs Pickleball, and Oakridge Community.

In the summer of 2023, Bill competed in his first Provincial Sanctioned Pickleball tournament, where he earned a Gold medal in Men’s Doubles while also refereeing 30 games. This accomplishment reflects not only his skill as a player but also his dedication to the spirit of the sport.

Bill’s teaching philosophy is straightforward yet impactful: players need to learn how to hit the ball, where to hit the ball, and why to hit the ball there. Through this approach, he instills a deep understanding of the game while fostering a love for pickleball among his students.
